Hybrid golf clubs have revolutionised the game of golf over the last 10 years. Whether you are a keen golfer, or even a beginner, you will have no doubt come across hybrid golf clubs. Sometimes referred to as ‘rescue clubs’, an amazing amount of technology and research has gone into the development of these ground breaking clubs. So much so that they are not only popular with beginners and high handicappers but most tour pros now carry at least one hybrid in their bags.
What is a Hybrid Golf Club?
A hybrid is essentially the combination of a fairway wood and a traditional iron with a user-friendly shorter shaft length. The hybrid club came about to replace the longer irons, specifically numbers 1,2,3,4 and even 5 irons. Long irons have always been difficult to hit, especially for beginners. Garages up and down the country are filled with rusting long irons that have been removed from golfers’ bags out of frustration.
Around 10 years ago, the hybrid golf club design began to emerge on the golf scene. Within the last 5 years the development and popularity of this golf club has grown to such an extent that it is rare these days to see fellow golfers playing with anything longer than a 4 iron, or indeed playing without a hybrid golf club in their bag.
Hybrid Design & Technology
The reason that hybrid golf clubs are so popular is that they are a lot easier to play with than either long irons or fairway woods and they are also extremely forgiving. This is largely down to the science and technology incorporated into the club head design, along with the shorter shaft.
The hybrid head design has the weight shifted away from the face, towards the sole and back of the head. The result is a golf club head with a lower centre of gravity which leads to a greater increase in momentum and inertia, thus resulting in more accurate shots. It also enables the beginner to get the ball off the ground and airborne with greater ease, even with a slower swing speed. But the real beauty with a hybrid golf club is the versatility. They can be used pretty much anywhere, be it from the tee, the fairway, the fringe of the green or even the dreaded rough!
Which Hybrid do I need?
When buying a hybrid golf club, it is important to consider which club you wish to replace. There is a large range of hybrid clubs on the market and it can be a little confusing trying to figure out the best one to choose. As a general rule of thumb, the best indicator of comparable iron clubs is the loft. Most 21° lofted hybrids, match up closely with a 3 iron. 24° loft is similar to the 4 iron. 27° Loft is comparable to a 5 iron.
Here at Golf Division we have a great choice of hybrid and rescue golf clubs. If you are new to hybrids we would suggest the Falcon Fireblade steel shafted rescue clubs at the unbeatable price of £15.99 each.
